Narrative:

Level at FL280 under ZJX control, TCASII alerted 'traffic' at 3 O'clock, about 3 mi, about 1600 ft below us. VMC allowed us to quickly spot the dc-8 and see that it was on a converging path and climbing. The TCASII next alerted 'climb,' and we climbed to FL290 to avoid a possible collision. The dc-8 seemed to pass within 500 ft of us, but since we perceive other aircraft closer than they normally are, I think 3000 ft is probably a realistic guess. The conflict aircraft appeared to be a dc-8, and apparently thought he had been cleared to FL370 when in fact he had been cleared to FL270. Chalk up another save for TCASII, and thank goodness we have it.

Title: ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION DURING FLC RESPONSE TO TCASII RA.

Narrative: LEVEL AT FL280 UNDER ZJX CTL, TCASII ALERTED 'TFC' AT 3 O'CLOCK, ABOUT 3 MI, ABOUT 1600 FT BELOW US. VMC ALLOWED US TO QUICKLY SPOT THE DC-8 AND SEE THAT IT WAS ON A CONVERGING PATH AND CLBING. THE TCASII NEXT ALERTED 'CLB,' AND WE CLBED TO FL290 TO AVOID A POSSIBLE COLLISION. THE DC-8 SEEMED TO PASS WITHIN 500 FT OF US, BUT SINCE WE PERCEIVE OTHER ACFT CLOSER THAN THEY NORMALLY ARE, I THINK 3000 FT IS PROBABLY A REALISTIC GUESS. THE CONFLICT ACFT APPEARED TO BE A DC-8, AND APPARENTLY THOUGHT HE HAD BEEN CLRED TO FL370 WHEN IN FACT HE HAD BEEN CLRED TO FL270. CHALK UP ANOTHER SAVE FOR TCASII, AND THANK GOODNESS WE HAVE IT.
