Narrative:

I was tracking to peach springs VOR when at about 4 mi out a spotted an aircraft at my 5 O'clock converging. The aircraft was a navajo chieftan and overtaking me at approximately 30 KTS faster. The aircraft made no changes to altitude or heading and continued to converge at a high closure rate. I pulled-up and initiated a medium bank turn to the left, I could not turn to the right because the aircraft was still behind me approximately 4 O'clock position. After initiating the turn I noticed that the aircraft was closer and at my same altitude, initially they were approximately 100 ft below. At approximately 100 ft horizontal away the aircraft made an abrupt steep turn to the right to avoid us. I believe that if I would have initially taken the aircraft as more of a possible threat I could have made altitude or heading changes to better avoid. Also, if the other pilot had seen me they could have done the same. I recognized the aircraft and spoke with the pilot on the ground and he acknowledged that he never saw me until we were close even though I was at his 10-11 O'clock position.

Narrative: I WAS TRACKING TO PEACH SPRINGS VOR WHEN AT ABOUT 4 MI OUT A SPOTTED AN ACFT AT MY 5 O'CLOCK CONVERGING. THE ACFT WAS A NAVAJO CHIEFTAN AND OVERTAKING ME AT APPROX 30 KTS FASTER. THE ACFT MADE NO CHANGES TO ALT OR HDG AND CONTINUED TO CONVERGE AT A HIGH CLOSURE RATE. I PULLED-UP AND INITIATED A MEDIUM BANK TURN TO THE L, I COULD NOT TURN TO THE R BECAUSE THE ACFT WAS STILL BEHIND ME APPROX 4 O'CLOCK POS. AFTER INITIATING THE TURN I NOTICED THAT THE ACFT WAS CLOSER AND AT MY SAME ALT, INITIALLY THEY WERE APPROX 100 FT BELOW. AT APPROX 100 FT HORIZ AWAY THE ACFT MADE AN ABRUPT STEEP TURN TO THE R TO AVOID US. I BELIEVE THAT IF I WOULD HAVE INITIALLY TAKEN THE ACFT AS MORE OF A POSSIBLE THREAT I COULD HAVE MADE ALT OR HDG CHANGES TO BETTER AVOID. ALSO, IF THE OTHER PLT HAD SEEN ME THEY COULD HAVE DONE THE SAME. I RECOGNIZED THE ACFT AND SPOKE WITH THE PLT ON THE GND AND HE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT HE NEVER SAW ME UNTIL WE WERE CLOSE EVEN THOUGH I WAS AT HIS 10-11 O'CLOCK POS.
