Narrative:

Revenue flight from den to oak. Flight came in from dsm, had a 30-35 min turn with aircraft change. New copilot (second trip after IOE). Several ground distrs and omc. Deadheading crew member in cockpit until doors closed, just simply forgot to check logbook in its place prior to pushback. Copilot obviously also forgot to back me up. Captain's responsibility. After takeoff, notified dispatch and arranged for electronic ('spare') logbook to meet the aircraft.
