Narrative:

After takeoff from phl en route to pbi we were switched to departure control. When the first officer switched he still had the ATIS tuned on the other head. He found the correct frequency and called departure control. Departure control changed our squawk code. At the time we changed the squawk code, the first officer told me that he forgot to get a clearance. No pre departure clearance was on file in the ACARS either. We were cleared to ood. Upon being switched to washington center, I requested a verified routing. It was as filed. A checklist revision reflecting that the clearance was obtained prior to taxi and a more professional first officer would have averted this problem.

Title: MLG DEPARTS WITHOUT ENRTE CLRNC.

Narrative: AFTER TKOF FROM PHL ENRTE TO PBI WE WERE SWITCHED TO DEP CTL. WHEN THE FO SWITCHED HE STILL HAD THE ATIS TUNED ON THE OTHER HEAD. HE FOUND THE CORRECT FREQ AND CALLED DEP CTL. DEP CTL CHANGED OUR SQUAWK CODE. AT THE TIME WE CHANGED THE SQUAWK CODE, THE FO TOLD ME THAT HE FORGOT TO GET A CLRNC. NO PDC WAS ON FILE IN THE ACARS EITHER. WE WERE CLRED TO OOD. UPON BEING SWITCHED TO WASHINGTON CTR, I REQUESTED A VERIFIED RTING. IT WAS AS FILED. A CHKLIST REVISION REFLECTING THAT THE CLRNC WAS OBTAINED PRIOR TO TAXI AND A MORE PROFESSIONAL FO WOULD HAVE AVERTED THIS PROB.
