Narrative:

When we received the aircraft, there was a write-up about an engine anti-ice valve. Maintenance worked on and wired open this valve (1 of 3). The logbook was signed off and the engine valve was placarded. We departed iah for sat and were selcaled en route. We were told to contact the dispatcher when we arrived at sat. We called him and were told that due to a slip up, that we were overgrossed by 12500 pounds due to the penalty and should not have been released from the gate. As far as we were concerned, maintenance was conferring with maintenance control, and as soon as we were placarded, we were released (after the logbook was signed off). The flight was uneventful.
