Narrative:

I was getting a relief briefing from another controller and was about to assume charge of the sector (ZLC ARTCC sector 5). Both the relieving controller and myself noticed a limited data block at FL310 getting near our sector boundary, since the beacon was correlated, I brought up the data block -- it was handing off to sector 15 (sectors 16 and 15 combined at 15). I heard the denver controller call sector 15. I punched on the line in time to hear the denver controller tell sector 15 that the aircraft was deviating west for WX. Because of other control actions needed on my sector, I got off the line and did other duties. Air carrier X called me level at FL310 and stated that he was deviating west for WX. I called the sector 15 controller to see if denver had told him to point out the aircraft to me. He told me that the only thing denver had said was that the aircraft was deviating. I told air carrier X to contact salt lake center on 133.25 (sector 16). By now the aircraft was in my sector. I called the denver controller and told him 'point out approved.' he said that I had taken the handoff. I told him that I was working sector 5 -- he said that he knew and that I had taken the handoff. He was confused because he had coordination with sector 15. I told him that there was no problem and that I had a point out. The denver controller later called to tell me that sector 32 was combining up at sector 34 -- once again he apologized but, he thought I had the handoff and he had two separation problems occurring during that same time. I told him that it wasn't a problem because I didn't have any traffic in that part of my sector.

Narrative: I WAS GETTING A RELIEF BRIEFING FROM ANOTHER CTLR AND WAS ABOUT TO ASSUME CHARGE OF THE SECTOR (ZLC ARTCC SECTOR 5). BOTH THE RELIEVING CTLR AND MYSELF NOTICED A LIMITED DATA BLOCK AT FL310 GETTING NEAR OUR SECTOR BOUNDARY, SINCE THE BEACON WAS CORRELATED, I BROUGHT UP THE DATA BLOCK -- IT WAS HANDING OFF TO SECTOR 15 (SECTORS 16 AND 15 COMBINED AT 15). I HEARD THE DENVER CTLR CALL SECTOR 15. I PUNCHED ON THE LINE IN TIME TO HEAR THE DENVER CTLR TELL SECTOR 15 THAT THE ACFT WAS DEVIATING W FOR WX. BECAUSE OF OTHER CTL ACTIONS NEEDED ON MY SECTOR, I GOT OFF THE LINE AND DID OTHER DUTIES. ACR X CALLED ME LEVEL AT FL310 AND STATED THAT HE WAS DEVIATING W FOR WX. I CALLED THE SECTOR 15 CTLR TO SEE IF DENVER HAD TOLD HIM TO POINT OUT THE ACFT TO ME. HE TOLD ME THAT THE ONLY THING DENVER HAD SAID WAS THAT THE ACFT WAS DEVIATING. I TOLD ACR X TO CONTACT SALT LAKE CTR ON 133.25 (SECTOR 16). BY NOW THE ACFT WAS IN MY SECTOR. I CALLED THE DENVER CTLR AND TOLD HIM 'POINT OUT APPROVED.' HE SAID THAT I HAD TAKEN THE HDOF. I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS WORKING SECTOR 5 -- HE SAID THAT HE KNEW AND THAT I HAD TAKEN THE HDOF. HE WAS CONFUSED BECAUSE HE HAD COORD WITH SECTOR 15. I TOLD HIM THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM AND THAT I HAD A POINT OUT. THE DENVER CTLR LATER CALLED TO TELL ME THAT SECTOR 32 WAS COMBINING UP AT SECTOR 34 -- ONCE AGAIN HE APOLOGIZED BUT, HE THOUGHT I HAD THE HDOF AND HE HAD TWO SEPARATION PROBLEMS OCCURRING DURING THAT SAME TIME. I TOLD HIM THAT IT WASN'T A PROBLEM BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE ANY TFC IN THAT PART OF MY SECTOR.
