Narrative:

Confusion with ATC re: ny TCA. Called ny approach at appropriate advance point for permission to enter. Told not within approach range yet (?) and to go back to ZBW. When LORAN TCA warning persisted, went back to ny approach in 10 mins and then told to stay out of TCA. At this point was either in or very near TCA and at my discretion climbed to approximately 7150' MSL and went over top of TCA. Advised ny approach accordingly. Event complicated by VOR navigation problems and radio system audio panel selector knob had broken off and was using pliers to switch radios (forgot to advise ZBW when leaving frequency--they got a bit testy about it).
