Narrative:
On approach to ord heading 090 degrees at 7000' north and east of the airport, approach control asked if we had traffic at 12 O'clock on a dogleg to final. We had been following traffic for several mi and I advised we did have the traffic. Approach control cleared us for the visibility approach to runway 27R. As we started to descend and turn base, we saw another aircraft on a west heading several mi east of our position. We assumed since they were using runway 27L and right, the traffic was for runway 27L. After completing the turn to base, the controller asked if we had our traffic, an large transport at 12 O'clock. Approach then told us to level off and turn left immediately to 090 degrees. We complied and continued the approach to runway 27R. Contributing factors: inability to identify company and aircraft type several mi away, assuming our traffic was the aircraft we had been following, and we should have questioned the controller when we observed what we thought was unrpted parallel traffic.

Title: ON VECTORED APCH TO ORD, FLT CREW SIGHTED TRAFFIC POINTED OUT BY RADAR CTLR. REPORTER BELIEVES HIS FLT CREW MISIDENTIFIED THE TRAFFIC THEY WERE TO FOLLOW AND CAME TOO CLOSE TO THEIR REAL TRAFFIC.
Narrative: ON APCH TO ORD HDG 090 DEGS AT 7000' N AND E OF THE ARPT, APCH CTL ASKED IF WE HAD TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK ON A DOGLEG TO FINAL. WE HAD BEEN FOLLOWING TFC FOR SEVERAL MI AND I ADVISED WE DID HAVE THE TFC. APCH CTL CLRED US FOR THE VIS APCH TO RWY 27R. AS WE STARTED TO DSND AND TURN BASE, WE SAW ANOTHER ACFT ON A W HDG SEVERAL MI E OF OUR POS. WE ASSUMED SINCE THEY WERE USING RWY 27L AND R, THE TFC WAS FOR RWY 27L. AFTER COMPLETING THE TURN TO BASE, THE CTLR ASKED IF WE HAD OUR TFC, AN LGT AT 12 O'CLOCK. APCH THEN TOLD US TO LEVEL OFF AND TURN LEFT IMMEDIATELY TO 090 DEGS. WE COMPLIED AND CONTINUED THE APCH TO RWY 27R. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: INABILITY TO IDENT COMPANY AND ACFT TYPE SEVERAL MI AWAY, ASSUMING OUR TFC WAS THE ACFT WE HAD BEEN FOLLOWING, AND WE SHOULD HAVE QUESTIONED THE CTLR WHEN WE OBSERVED WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS UNRPTED PARALLEL TFC.
