Narrative:

I was en route from osu to cmh. I understood ATC to clear me to land on 28L. I was turning base to final when I saw an small aircraft above and ahead of me. I asked tower to verify my clearance to land on 28L. They told me to make an immediate turn to the north and cleared me to land on 28R. Osu was using 9R for departure; cmh was landing 28L/right. The closeness of the 2 airports precludes obtaining ATIS before contacting the arsa. I was anticipating landing in the same direction as that from which I had taken off. The instructions to expect 28 was a surprise. I focused on the 28 instruction as opposed to the left/right direction. The demands of handling a complex aircraft are exacerbated by the briefness of the trip (taking care of cleaning up the aircraft after takeoff and immediately preparing it to land). The week before I had flown into cmh and 28R was closed. Inasmuch as cmh is preparing to extend the north runway and there is already a great deal of construction in place at the airport, I, apparently erroneously, presumed that then runway would not be closed indefinitely. This preconception colored my anticipation of landing instructions. I hate to screw up. It looks as if I did, and royally. If anything good is to come of this, it will be the lesson I have learned that there is no substitute to adherence to the basics. Readback all clrncs, and ask for a repeat of instructions if any doubt or possibility of a mixup should occur.

Title: SMT MAKES APCH TO LEFT RWY INSTEAD OF RIGHT. NMAC.

Narrative: I WAS ENRTE FROM OSU TO CMH. I UNDERSTOOD ATC TO CLR ME TO LAND ON 28L. I WAS TURNING BASE TO FINAL WHEN I SAW AN SMA ABOVE AND AHEAD OF ME. I ASKED TWR TO VERIFY MY CLRNC TO LAND ON 28L. THEY TOLD ME TO MAKE AN IMMEDIATE TURN TO THE N AND CLRED ME TO LAND ON 28R. OSU WAS USING 9R FOR DEP; CMH WAS LNDG 28L/R. THE CLOSENESS OF THE 2 ARPTS PRECLUDES OBTAINING ATIS BEFORE CONTACTING THE ARSA. I WAS ANTICIPATING LNDG IN THE SAME DIRECTION AS THAT FROM WHICH I HAD TAKEN OFF. THE INSTRUCTIONS TO EXPECT 28 WAS A SURPRISE. I FOCUSED ON THE 28 INSTRUCTION AS OPPOSED TO THE L/R DIRECTION. THE DEMANDS OF HANDLING A COMPLEX ACFT ARE EXACERBATED BY THE BRIEFNESS OF THE TRIP (TAKING CARE OF CLEANING UP THE ACFT AFTER TKOF AND IMMEDIATELY PREPARING IT TO LAND). THE WK BEFORE I HAD FLOWN INTO CMH AND 28R WAS CLOSED. INASMUCH AS CMH IS PREPARING TO EXTEND THE N RWY AND THERE IS ALREADY A GREAT DEAL OF CONSTRUCTION IN PLACE AT THE ARPT, I, APPARENTLY ERRONEOUSLY, PRESUMED THAT THEN RWY WOULD NOT BE CLOSED INDEFINITELY. THIS PRECONCEPTION COLORED MY ANTICIPATION OF LNDG INSTRUCTIONS.
