Narrative:

I was giving dual to an INS instrument applicant. He was flying the ILS to runway 36 at tup. I was making all the appropriate calls on unicom. (Marker outbnd, procedure turn outbnd, etc.) there was an light transport inbound from the northwest, he said that he would enter a right base for runway 18 (that was the favored runway). At the marker I reported inbound and told the light transport that I would be looking for him. At about 1 mi short I still didn't have the light transport in sight, so I instructed my student to execute a missed approach, and turn to heading of 030 degrees. I did this to stay away from the inbound aircraft, and set up for a new approach. About the time my student rolled out on 030 degrees, an small aircraft called downwind for runway 18. (I had been monitoring unicom for over 15 mins. This was the small aircraft's first call.) as we were still 1/2-1/4 mi south of the airport, and headed toward the downwind leg for 18, I took control of the aircraft. I continued the turn toward the south to turn away from the traffic pattern. As I turned through approximately 100 degrees, I saw the small aircraft at 1-2 O'clock. I increased the rate of turn as much as was safe. I don't think the pilot of the small aircraft ever saw me. He certainly never made any evasive maneuvers. I can only wonder what he was looking at while entering the traffic pattern.

Title: SMA ON PRACTICE INS APCH DOES A MISS AND TURNS TOWARD SECOND SMA ENTERING DOWNWIND. NMAC.

Narrative: I WAS GIVING DUAL TO AN INS INSTR APPLICANT. HE WAS FLYING THE ILS TO RWY 36 AT TUP. I WAS MAKING ALL THE APPROPRIATE CALLS ON UNICOM. (MARKER OUTBND, PROC TURN OUTBND, ETC.) THERE WAS AN LTT INBND FROM THE NW, HE SAID THAT HE WOULD ENTER A RIGHT BASE FOR RWY 18 (THAT WAS THE FAVORED RWY). AT THE MARKER I RPTED INBND AND TOLD THE LTT THAT I WOULD BE LOOKING FOR HIM. AT ABOUT 1 MI SHORT I STILL DIDN'T HAVE THE LTT IN SIGHT, SO I INSTRUCTED MY STUDENT TO EXECUTE A MISSED APCH, AND TURN TO HDG OF 030 DEGS. I DID THIS TO STAY AWAY FROM THE INBND ACFT, AND SET UP FOR A NEW APCH. ABOUT THE TIME MY STUDENT ROLLED OUT ON 030 DEGS, AN SMA CALLED DOWNWIND FOR RWY 18. (I HAD BEEN MONITORING UNICOM FOR OVER 15 MINS. THIS WAS THE SMA'S FIRST CALL.) AS WE WERE STILL 1/2-1/4 MI S OF THE ARPT, AND HEADED TOWARD THE DOWNWIND LEG FOR 18, I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT. I CONTINUED THE TURN TOWARD THE S TO TURN AWAY FROM THE TFC PATTERN. AS I TURNED THROUGH APPROX 100 DEGS, I SAW THE SMA AT 1-2 O'CLOCK. I INCREASED THE RATE OF TURN AS MUCH AS WAS SAFE. I DON'T THINK THE PLT OF THE SMA EVER SAW ME. HE CERTAINLY NEVER MADE ANY EVASIVE MANEUVERS. I CAN ONLY WONDER WHAT HE WAS LOOKING AT WHILE ENTERING THE TFC PATTERN.
