Narrative:

I was en route from odi into new holland airpark and had an airspeed of 80 mph and was descending at about 200'/FPM to pattern altitude at new holland approximately 1700' MSL. I was crossing the western edge of the mississippi river and was listening to winona unicom for possible traffic. The other airplane, a larger high wing single engine, was descending and was noticed over and slightly in front of my left wing. Initially the other airplane seemed much higher, but by the time I had recognized a problem (2-3 seconds) I had to make an abrupt descending right turn. The difference in terrain perhaps caused me to misjudge the other aircraft's altitude as well. The high rate of closure also was probably a contributing factor in my hesitation. I don't believe the other aircraft saw me at all probably due to the blind spot created by his engine cowling. I also believe his speed was much greater than mine.

Title: PLT OF SMA DESCENDING TOWARD 36WI HAS NMAC WITH ANOTHER SMA THAT OVERFLEW HIM FROM HIS 8 O'CLOCK.

Narrative: I WAS ENRTE FROM ODI INTO NEW HOLLAND AIRPARK AND HAD AN AIRSPD OF 80 MPH AND WAS DSNDING AT ABOUT 200'/FPM TO PATTERN ALT AT NEW HOLLAND APPROX 1700' MSL. I WAS XING THE WESTERN EDGE OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER AND WAS LISTENING TO WINONA UNICOM FOR POSSIBLE TFC. THE OTHER AIRPLANE, A LARGER HIGH WING SINGLE ENG, WAS DSNDING AND WAS NOTICED OVER AND SLIGHTLY IN FRONT OF MY L WING. INITIALLY THE OTHER AIRPLANE SEEMED MUCH HIGHER, BUT BY THE TIME I HAD RECOGNIZED A PROB (2-3 SECS) I HAD TO MAKE AN ABRUPT DSNDING R TURN. THE DIFFERENCE IN TERRAIN PERHAPS CAUSED ME TO MISJUDGE THE OTHER ACFT'S ALT AS WELL. THE HIGH RATE OF CLOSURE ALSO WAS PROBABLY A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IN MY HESITATION. I DON'T BELIEVE THE OTHER ACFT SAW ME AT ALL PROBABLY DUE TO THE BLIND SPOT CREATED BY HIS ENG COWLING. I ALSO BELIEVE HIS SPD WAS MUCH GREATER THAN MINE.
