Narrative:

On takeoff; we experienced an erratic left engine low oil quantity indication. After leveling off at 5;000 feet; the engine oil indication returned to normal range. However; the oil quantity indication was fluctuating abnormally. As a precaution; we elected to return to ZZZ to allow maintenance an opportunity to correct the issue. Although the visibility was 2 NM at the FAF; we did not see the field at minimums. Subsequently; we diverted to our takeoff alternate without further incident.
