Narrative:

We were taxiing out for takeoff at ewr. The takeoff runway was runway 4L; full length. We were told to taxi from the ramp via taxiway B; then taxiway rb; and hold short of taxiway PA. We complied with these instructions. While on taxiway rb and approaching taxiway PA; we were instructed to continue taxiing to runway 4L via taxiway V; then taxiway D and to give way to aircraft Y that was to our left and taxiing south on taxiway D. We were told that we were number 9 in the takeoff sequence. At the intersection of taxiway rb and PA; the captain turned south on taxiway PA instead of continuing straight ahead to taxiway V. This happened as I was repeating our assigned taxi clearance back to ground control (121.8). I had difficulty hearing the controller's instructions and reading them back to the controller because the captain was talking over the radios about something irrelevant at the time. I expected that he heard and comprehended the clearance; but he did not. As we had turned south on taxiway PA; I immediately informed the captain that we were on the wrong taxiway. The captain immediately realized this as well. I informed him that I would contact ground control and report our error; but he told me not to worry about it and immediately turned the aircraft left into what I think is a concrete holding pad between taxiway PA and taxiway D. I queried the captain that I didn't think this was the appropriate place for us to be and that he needed to stop the aircraft but he continued into the pad and informed me that we could just wait in the pad for aircraft Y to pass southbound and then fall in line behind aircraft Y as instructed. As I looked left at him in disbelief of what he just done; I also noticed southbound aircraft Y that we were to follow would be in conflict to where he had maneuvered and parked the aircraft as the wingtip of the oncoming aircraft Y was clearly going to come into contact with our aircraft eventually. I informed the captain of this and even mentioned that aircraft Z; that was also southbound on taxiway D and in front of aircraft Y; which we were to follow; would be unable to continue taxiing because aircraft Z's wingtip would be dangerously close to the nose of our aircraft.I informed the captain that he was going to have to move the aircraft immediately for safety reasons and because southbound takeoff traffic on taxiway D could not continue taxiing because we were in the way. Again; I told the captain that I would contact ground for further movement and he informed that he would just move the aircraft out of the holding pad and back towards taxiway PA and not to worry about the radio call to ground. Becoming more frustrated and aggravated by the second; I informed him that ground control was going to get very mad at us and that we should query ground control immediately. As the captain began to maneuver the aircraft; ground control called us on 121.8 and asked us what in the hell we were doing and wanted to know where we were going. I told the captain to take (answer) the radio call as I clearly had no idea what in the hell he was doing; because he clearly didn't want my input. Ground control instructed us to continue taxiing south on taxiway PA and to hold short of 4L and await our sequence for takeoff behind southbound aircraft Y. They also told us to switch frequencies to tower and then await further instructions for takeoff from tower (118.3).
