Narrative:

After taxiing, post-flight, at cps in an small aircraft X and in turning left to line up with a tie-down, my right wing tip struck the upper surface of the left ruddervator of a parked small aircraft Y causing it substantial damage. My aircraft was essentially unharmed except for the slight acquisition of some paint off the small aircraft Y. A telephone call to the NTSB result in the informal determination that no report was required in the absence of damage to my craft. The owner of the itinerant small aircraft Y was contacted and he was put in touch with my insurance carrier. At cps, in the center of the northern tarmac, there lie two rows of parallel, opp-facing, chain, 3-POINT tie-downs, it is thus often necessary to approach an occupied tie from the right or left rear quadrant, clear the rudder of the parked aircraft and then make a sharp turn outbnd to line up the aircraft. It was in performing this maneuver that the above referenced mishap occurred. I cleared the left ruddervator to the small aircraft Y but my ground track must have been somewhat angled instead of straight for when I looked away to make the turn to line up with my tie-downs, I struck the left ruddervator. Since a moveable object ought not to strike an immobile one, I can hardly say I was not careless in the matter, even though I have performed the same maneuver countless times west/O mishap.

Title: SMA PLT HITS ANOTHER SMA WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PARK HIS ACFT. TAIL STRIKE WITH WINGTIP.

Narrative: AFTER TAXIING, POST-FLT, AT CPS IN AN SMA X AND IN TURNING L TO LINE UP WITH A TIE-DOWN, MY R WING TIP STRUCK THE UPPER SURFACE OF THE L RUDDERVATOR OF A PARKED SMA Y CAUSING IT SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. MY ACFT WAS ESSENTIALLY UNHARMED EXCEPT FOR THE SLIGHT ACQUISITION OF SOME PAINT OFF THE SMA Y. A TELEPHONE CALL TO THE NTSB RESULT IN THE INFORMAL DETERMINATION THAT NO RPT WAS REQUIRED IN THE ABSENCE OF DAMAGE TO MY CRAFT. THE OWNER OF THE ITINERANT SMA Y WAS CONTACTED AND HE WAS PUT IN TOUCH WITH MY INSURANCE CARRIER. AT CPS, IN THE CTR OF THE NORTHERN TARMAC, THERE LIE TWO ROWS OF PARALLEL, OPP-FACING, CHAIN, 3-POINT TIE-DOWNS, IT IS THUS OFTEN NECESSARY TO APCH AN OCCUPIED TIE FROM THE R OR L REAR QUADRANT, CLR THE RUDDER OF THE PARKED ACFT AND THEN MAKE A SHARP TURN OUTBND TO LINE UP THE ACFT. IT WAS IN PERFORMING THIS MANEUVER THAT THE ABOVE REFERENCED MISHAP OCCURRED. I CLRED THE L RUDDERVATOR TO THE SMA Y BUT MY GND TRACK MUST HAVE BEEN SOMEWHAT ANGLED INSTEAD OF STRAIGHT FOR WHEN I LOOKED AWAY TO MAKE THE TURN TO LINE UP WITH MY TIE-DOWNS, I STRUCK THE L RUDDERVATOR. SINCE A MOVEABLE OBJECT OUGHT NOT TO STRIKE AN IMMOBILE ONE, I CAN HARDLY SAY I WAS NOT CARELESS IN THE MATTER, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE PERFORMED THE SAME MANEUVER COUNTLESS TIMES W/O MISHAP.
