Narrative:

I have done virtually all of my IFR flying to and from low density airports, and it is my custom when beginning an IFR flight, in VFR WX, from an uncontrolled airport, to take off and depart VFR, with intention to pick up the IFR clearance from ATC after takeoff. This procedure was not well received at new york ('we don't do it that way here!' -- ny departure). Consequently I needed to maintain VFR flight and avoid the TCA for longer than I had anticipated. No real problem, but it strikes me that no information source exists to warn the rural pilot of procedural differences of this sort at busy TCA's.
