Narrative:

About 200 mi north of atl, we heard and felt the #3 engine shudder and lose power. The egt was pegged over 800 degrees C. #3 was brought to idle, the bleeds (243) were swapped and essential was transferred. The engine fire failure checklist was called for. I had the copilot continue flying. The captain and F/east went through the checklist. When the start lever was cut, the temperature began to drop and a chattering was felt in the #3 throttle lever. After the fire button was pressed, the egt continued to decrease passing about 400 degrees C. The egt dropped to 0 degrees C. There was no fire warning light or belly and all other gauges read normal. A gradual descent was requested and received from FL310 to FL240. An emergency was declared, due to the high egt. We were about equal distance from mem, ord and dtw. The company asked us to go to dtw. We landed at dtw, and had the fire department check the engine area. They found nothing. We had them follow us to the gate area. We were at the gate at XC58L. After the checklist was finished, the lead F/a informed us that a woman had had a diabetic seizure and was unconscious. Once we headed for dtw, I checked back with the lead. The woman's husband had given her an insulin shot, and the F/a's had brought her sugar and orange juice. The woman was calm. The husband said it was not unusual for his wife. They did not want a doctor to meet them.
