Narrative:

On taxi out from ramp area; prior to contacting ground control; first officer noticed that his #2 window (slider) was cracked (outer panel) from midway along the aft edge diagonally down to near the front lower corner. [We] referenced the QRH. Returned to the gate; advised dispatcher and maintenance control called out contract maintenance. Logbook entry accomplished per fom. At gate return; a second crack noticed; originating from same point and roughly parallel to the first. Maintenance control suggested to contract maintenance and captain to utilize MEL 30-11(cockpit window heat inoperative) to move aircraft to destination (revenue). After reviewing the MEL 30-11; captain requested ferry permit and engineering order (eo) for unpressurized ferry (crew only) to maintenance station for repair. Maintenance control decided to send company mechanic(s) and parts for repair. Flight canceled by maintenance control.

Title: B737-400 Captain is informed during taxi of a crack in the First Officer's sliding window. Maintenance attempts to defer the crack with MEL 30-11 for inoperative window heat; which the crew does not accept. The flight is canceled.
