Narrative:

I was the pilot flying on this flight. As we approached santo domingo's airspace santo domingo control cleared us from asivo to pokem; the if on the VOR DME runway 09 approach. I had flown to puj many times on the 737 and was comfortable with this clearance.we were given progressive descents from 15;000 ft; 7;000 ft; 5;000 ft; and 2;500 ft. There were rain showers along the route so I was deviating slightly left and right to avoid the heaviest areas. Once clear of the weather and proceeding to pokem and descending per our clearance to 2;500 ft we got the GPWS terrain warning. We accomplished the escape procedure and climbed to 4;000 ft. The warning ceased immediately upon initiating the climb. We then continued to pokem and completed the approach and landing.
