Narrative:

Upon departure from stl the flight was given a climb to 18000' due to southbound traffic at 19000. Pilot flying the aircraft levelled at 18000 on autoplt and started accelerating. The autoplt elevator servo out of trim light started blinking. Pilot disconnected autoplt but existing nose up trim zoomed aircraft off of altitude about 500'. He recovered immediately and returned to 18000'. Evidently this 5 second excursion set off center's alarm system because they questioned us and pointed out our traffic at 9 O'clock, 3 mi. Autoplt was written up at destination.
