Narrative:

While climbing through 1;000 ft AGL we got a lav smoke warning message. The captain declared an emergency and performed the required checklists. I handled the radios and monitored the autopilot. The flight attendant reported there was no sign of smoke or fire; just that something smelled 'funny'. We landed without incident and crash fire rescue equipment performed a cursory inspection outside the aircraft after which they followed us to our gate. Company maintenance was there waiting and we filled them in on what happened. We then changed aircraft and continued without further incident.
