Narrative:
A G5 was on left downwind for dal. I tightened up his downwind for a short approach to get in front of base traffic from the northeast; but it was too tight for the departure off dal. Recommendation; don't be so tight on the downwind at dal; or switch aircraft to dal tower earlier so they can provide visual separation.

Title: D10 Controller questioned his/her control techniques used during this event that resulted in an apparent minimally spaced situation.
Narrative: A G5 was on left downwind for DAL. I tightened up his downwind for a short approach to get in front of base traffic from the northeast; but it was too tight for the departure off DAL. Recommendation; don't be so tight on the downwind at DAL; or switch aircraft to DAL Tower earlier so they can provide visual separation.
