Narrative:

VFR flight from oak to wvi. Released from oak approach controller 13 NM northwest of wvi. Squawked 1200. At 10 NM wvi called wvi traffic on 122.8 and announced position and intention to land. Had already heard 2 other aircraft using runway 19. At 2 NM (on LORAN and RNAV) called wvi traffic to announce 2 NM northwest entering left downwind from over departure end of runway 19 for full stop. Between 10 and 2 NM position, had monitored frequency and heard 2 aircraft in pattern. Prior to turning left onto downwind, confirmed visually the 2 announced aircraft--one was on takeoff roll on runway 19 and the other was on final. Did not see or hear any other aircraft in pattern. Ceiling was ragged with bases at 1500+/- and visibility 5 mi. Announced downwind left traffic full stop. Just past abeam position called turning left base, etc. Then heard other aircraft announce 'base 19 wvi.' I then announced 'wvi traffic identification apparently 2 aircraft on base for runway 19. Other aircraft, what's your position?' no response. Made similar call again. No response. Then saw small aircraft Y on short final. I had extended my downwind slightly while looking for traffic, so had ample time/distance to land without conflict. Problem: after taxiing into parking area, pilot of small aircraft Y accosted me--was totally irrational--called me names and threatened to punch me out. Tried to discuss with him. His problem was that he objected to my pattern entry (ie, overhead, left turn to left downwind). I tried to explain that I had listened, announced, scanned and did not see any traffic and only heard from 2 other aircraft until small aircraft Y announced in single call 'left base 19.' he believes my pattern entry was improper, but I considered it safe under the circumstances. The unsafe part was his failure to use his radio to inform me and other traffic of his location and intentions, then not responding when I requested his position on base, then his irrational behavior on the ground. I have discussed this situation with FAA safety counselor at wvi and he will contact small aircraft Y pilot. He also suggested I contact the accident prevention specialist at san jose GADO, which I will do. I believe pilot of small aircraft needs to learn to communication in the air and especially on the ground. Supplemental information from acn 89663: our aircraft was in the traffic pattern when aircraft #2 announced he was over the airport entering the pattern. We were unable to locate him until he passed directly over our aircraft 50-100' above us. I don't know how he entered the pattern except that he did not enter on the normal 45 degree entry. I was under the impression from talking to him that he felt he was not at fault because of his use of the radio in announcing his presence.

Title: CLOSE PROX 2 GA ACFT IN TRAFFIC AT WVI.

Narrative: VFR FLT FROM OAK TO WVI. RELEASED FROM OAK APCH CTLR 13 NM NW OF WVI. SQUAWKED 1200. AT 10 NM WVI CALLED WVI TFC ON 122.8 AND ANNOUNCED POS AND INTENTION TO LAND. HAD ALREADY HEARD 2 OTHER ACFT USING RWY 19. AT 2 NM (ON LORAN AND RNAV) CALLED WVI TFC TO ANNOUNCE 2 NM NW ENTERING LEFT DOWNWIND FROM OVER DEP END OF RWY 19 FOR FULL STOP. BTWN 10 AND 2 NM POS, HAD MONITORED FREQ AND HEARD 2 ACFT IN PATTERN. PRIOR TO TURNING LEFT ONTO DOWNWIND, CONFIRMED VISUALLY THE 2 ANNOUNCED ACFT--ONE WAS ON TKOF ROLL ON RWY 19 AND THE OTHER WAS ON FINAL. DID NOT SEE OR HEAR ANY OTHER ACFT IN PATTERN. CEILING WAS RAGGED WITH BASES AT 1500+/- AND VIS 5 MI. ANNOUNCED DOWNWIND LEFT TFC FULL STOP. JUST PAST ABEAM POS CALLED TURNING LEFT BASE, ETC. THEN HEARD OTHER ACFT ANNOUNCE 'BASE 19 WVI.' I THEN ANNOUNCED 'WVI TFC ID APPARENTLY 2 ACFT ON BASE FOR RWY 19. OTHER ACFT, WHAT'S YOUR POS?' NO RESPONSE. MADE SIMILAR CALL AGAIN. NO RESPONSE. THEN SAW SMA Y ON SHORT FINAL. I HAD EXTENDED MY DOWNWIND SLIGHTLY WHILE LOOKING FOR TFC, SO HAD AMPLE TIME/DISTANCE TO LAND WITHOUT CONFLICT. PROB: AFTER TAXIING INTO PARKING AREA, PLT OF SMA Y ACCOSTED ME--WAS TOTALLY IRRATIONAL--CALLED ME NAMES AND THREATENED TO PUNCH ME OUT. TRIED TO DISCUSS WITH HIM. HIS PROB WAS THAT HE OBJECTED TO MY PATTERN ENTRY (IE, OVERHEAD, LEFT TURN TO LEFT DOWNWIND). I TRIED TO EXPLAIN THAT I HAD LISTENED, ANNOUNCED, SCANNED AND DID NOT SEE ANY TFC AND ONLY HEARD FROM 2 OTHER ACFT UNTIL SMA Y ANNOUNCED IN SINGLE CALL 'L BASE 19.' HE BELIEVES MY PATTERN ENTRY WAS IMPROPER, BUT I CONSIDERED IT SAFE UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES. THE UNSAFE PART WAS HIS FAILURE TO USE HIS RADIO TO INFORM ME AND OTHER TFC OF HIS LOCATION AND INTENTIONS, THEN NOT RESPONDING WHEN I REQUESTED HIS POS ON BASE, THEN HIS IRRATIONAL BEHAVIOR ON THE GND. I HAVE DISCUSSED THIS SITUATION WITH FAA SAFETY COUNSELOR AT WVI AND HE WILL CONTACT SMA Y PLT. HE ALSO SUGGESTED I CONTACT THE ACCIDENT PREVENTION SPECIALIST AT SAN JOSE GADO, WHICH I WILL DO. I BELIEVE PLT OF SMA NEEDS TO LEARN TO COM IN THE AIR AND ESPECIALLY ON THE GND. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 89663: OUR ACFT WAS IN THE TFC PATTERN WHEN ACFT #2 ANNOUNCED HE WAS OVER THE ARPT ENTERING THE PATTERN. WE WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE HIM UNTIL HE PASSED DIRECTLY OVER OUR ACFT 50-100' ABOVE US. I DON'T KNOW HOW HE ENTERED THE PATTERN EXCEPT THAT HE DID NOT ENTER ON THE NORMAL 45 DEG ENTRY. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION FROM TALKING TO HIM THAT HE FELT HE WAS NOT AT FAULT BECAUSE OF HIS USE OF THE RADIO IN ANNOUNCING HIS PRESENCE.
