Narrative: Upon initiation of the takeoff roll; engines stabilized at 40% N1; autothrottles (TOGA) engaged at approximately 60% N1. Left engine stalled and auto-shutdown; 'Engine Fail' indication displayed. Aborted takeoff at approximately 30-40 knots ground speed; taxied clear of runway; returned to gate; passengers deplaned.
