Narrative:

[After boarding] I closed the left L-1 door. It took three trys to successfully push the [door] handle down. About 3-5 minutes into the flight; you heard wind noise coming from the door. There was also some noise coming from the right R-1 door; I immediately notified the mechanic. He tried to use a blanket to stop the noise and went into the cockpit to notify the pilots. We turned around and went back to ZZZ. After about an hour; the mechanic opened/closed the front door four times before it finally engaged where he could push the handle down. I asked him if he would have the ground personnel [check] that the flap at the bottom of the door closed. He said that it was closed. We took off again; there was no cockpit light indicating that there was a problem with the door. There was a rigging problem with the door. The B737-800 went into maintenance and the door was re-rigged. An additional switch was put in. A company bulletin to increase crewmember awareness was issued to prevent future problems. Information is reviewed during training.
