Light transport X northbound at FL310, gmn direct pxn. Medium large transport Y southbound sjc-lax, reported leaving 18500' for FL230 at XA54Z, aircraft was cleared to FL330 and slowed to 250 KTS at XA53 for spacing. At XB01Z medium large transport Y was turned left to a heading of 070 degrees for spacing. Sep minima of 5 mi was lost at XB13. The closest proximity was 3.2 mi and 400'. I believed that the aircraft (medium large transport Y) was level at FL330 prior to issuing the turn.
