Narrative:

The tower was closed in isp at departure time after much weather and ATC delays earlier in the day. The first officer obtained an IFR clearance from approach control via radio and was not given a void time or hold for release. We taxied out on the CTAF and I asked the first officer if we had a void time and he said we were not given one. We departed isp VFR and then switched over to approach. Upon check-in the controller seemed to think we had been given a hold for release time from isp; but the first officer didn't remember receiving one when the clearance was obtained and had no indication of one on his written copy for readback. The flight departed VFR. There were no traffic conflicts or issues and the flight continued. I feel lengthy delays and ATC holds; operations with no tower operating; and backside of the clock are contributing factors.
