Narrative:

Cockpit air noise excessive. Missed numerous ATC calls en route. During descent into ZZZ air noise became so loud we were unable to understand ATC instructions. At 10000 ft using captain's authority/authorized I turned off left pack. At that point forward cockpit air noise was normal; made normal approach and landing. This aircraft in this condition is dangerous and needs to be taken OTS.

Title: A B757 CAPTAIN TURNED THE AIRCRAFT'S LEFT PACK OFF AT 10000 FT BECAUSE IT CREATED SO MUCH AIR NOISE; HEARING ATC WAS DIFFICULT. THIS CAPTAIN RECOMMENDS REMOVING THE AIRCRAFT FROM SERVICE.
