Narrative:
Preflight; engines start and taxi; all normal indications. On takeoff roll; at approximately 80 KTS; #1 engine's N1 began flashing; #1 EPR began rolling back on the center instrument panel and aircraft pulled slightly to the left; first officer verbalized the N1 and EPR indications. My leg; (captain's); I announced abort; brought the aircraft to a stop. We made an abort call to tower and a PA to the passenger/flight attendants. (Flight attendant reported cabin was calm.) at throttles idle; both engines indications were back to within limits (normal indications); brake temperatures normal. Cleared the runway and asked ATC for a delay on the taxiway; no assistance required. Checklist completed. I contacted dispatch and maintenance via cell phone. Maintenance requested exceedence from engine display panel; N1-105%; 2SEC; was recorded. Maintenance said; at a minimum; an inspection was required; the decision (captain; dispatch; maintenance) to return to the gate was made. ATC; flight attendants; passenger and operations were notified. Return to gate; brake temperatures remained within normal range.
