Narrative:

I was doing a touch and go and then heading back to ZZZ. I started taking off again; saw positives on my instruments; and looked down to see the frequency I was switching to next. The wind pushed me to the side of the runway as I was looking down and I must have released some back pressure as I looked down. As I was looking up; I hit a runway sign (a lighted box type). At the time I could not see what I hit. When I felt the bump; I pulled back on the yoke; steered back over the runway; and continued to climb. Tower instructed me to come back to take a look at the plane. The propeller had a chunk taken out of the tip and the left main was dented. I never thought the propeller hit anything; just the wheels caught something. This is complete pilot error. After doing hundreds of takeoffs; I got too comfortable and forgot that this is one of the most critical stages of flight.

Title: PA28 PILOT REPORTS STRIKING RUNWAY SIGN WHILE AIRBORNE JUST AFTER TAKE OFF. REPORTER WAS CHANGING RADIO FREQUENCY DURING THE INCIDENT.

Narrative: I WAS DOING A TOUCH AND GO AND THEN HDG BACK TO ZZZ. I STARTED TAKING OFF AGAIN; SAW POSITIVES ON MY INSTS; AND LOOKED DOWN TO SEE THE FREQ I WAS SWITCHING TO NEXT. THE WIND PUSHED ME TO THE SIDE OF THE RWY AS I WAS LOOKING DOWN AND I MUST HAVE RELEASED SOME BACK PRESSURE AS I LOOKED DOWN. AS I WAS LOOKING UP; I HIT A RWY SIGN (A LIGHTED BOX TYPE). AT THE TIME I COULD NOT SEE WHAT I HIT. WHEN I FELT THE BUMP; I PULLED BACK ON THE YOKE; STEERED BACK OVER THE RWY; AND CONTINUED TO CLB. TWR INSTRUCTED ME TO COME BACK TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE PLANE. THE PROP HAD A CHUNK TAKEN OUT OF THE TIP AND THE L MAIN WAS DENTED. I NEVER THOUGHT THE PROP HIT ANYTHING; JUST THE WHEELS CAUGHT SOMETHING. THIS IS COMPLETE PLT ERROR. AFTER DOING HUNDREDS OF TKOFS; I GOT TOO COMFORTABLE AND FORGOT THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST CRITICAL STAGES OF FLT.
