Narrative:

On landing; the aircraft touched down in the touchdown zone on centerline of runway 21. As the aircraft decelerated; the tailwheel was lowered to the runway. The aircraft then started to drift slightly to the left. Slight control was applied to return the aircraft to the centerline. Shortly thereafter; the tail abruptly swung left. The left wingtip contacted the runway as the aircraft tracked abruptly to the right. The aircraft decelerated and exited the runway to the right onto flat dirt. The aircraft's left main tire came in contact with an airport information sign which caused the aircraft's tail to rise such that the aircraft stopped in a 3-POINT position on the 2 main front wheels and the propeller. The sign was so close to the runway; that a portion of the aircraft still remained over the runway and the front wheels ended up only a few ft off the pavement. In my opinion; if the sign had been 20-25 ft back from the edge of the pavement; the aircraft would have come to a stop in the dirt. The aircraft would not have nosed over; and no damage to the sign or propeller would have occurred.

Title: PILOT OF MILITARY TRAINER LOSES CONTROL ON LANDING; EXITS RUNWAY AND STRIKES AIRPORT INFORMATION SIGN; CAUSING NOSE OVER AND PROP STRIKE.

Narrative: ON LNDG; THE ACFT TOUCHED DOWN IN THE TOUCHDOWN ZONE ON CTRLINE OF RWY 21. AS THE ACFT DECELERATED; THE TAILWHEEL WAS LOWERED TO THE RWY. THE ACFT THEN STARTED TO DRIFT SLIGHTLY TO THE L. SLIGHT CTL WAS APPLIED TO RETURN THE ACFT TO THE CTRLINE. SHORTLY THEREAFTER; THE TAIL ABRUPTLY SWUNG L. THE L WINGTIP CONTACTED THE RWY AS THE ACFT TRACKED ABRUPTLY TO THE R. THE ACFT DECELERATED AND EXITED THE RWY TO THE R ONTO FLAT DIRT. THE ACFT'S L MAIN TIRE CAME IN CONTACT WITH AN ARPT INFO SIGN WHICH CAUSED THE ACFT'S TAIL TO RISE SUCH THAT THE ACFT STOPPED IN A 3-POINT POSITION ON THE 2 MAIN FRONT WHEELS AND THE PROP. THE SIGN WAS SO CLOSE TO THE RWY; THAT A PORTION OF THE ACFT STILL REMAINED OVER THE RWY AND THE FRONT WHEELS ENDED UP ONLY A FEW FT OFF THE PAVEMENT. IN MY OPINION; IF THE SIGN HAD BEEN 20-25 FT BACK FROM THE EDGE OF THE PAVEMENT; THE ACFT WOULD HAVE COME TO A STOP IN THE DIRT. THE ACFT WOULD NOT HAVE NOSED OVER; AND NO DAMAGE TO THE SIGN OR PROP WOULD HAVE OCCURRED.
