Narrative:

I am an evening shift flyer on a morning shift trip. While first officer was doing the walkaround; I got the pre departure clearance. Flight plan called for the TRALR2. The modified pre departure clearance called for staav. Loaded the FMC according to the flight plan. After departure; ATC queried about departure procedure. We replied we had the tralr and he said we should have been on staav according to modified pre departure clearance. Told us to go direct foldd on the staav. After reviewing the pre departure clearance; noticed I missed the modified staav. ATC advised that no traffic conflict and no problems and no need to file a report. I know we get warned about this constantly; but just missed it and will be more vigilant in the future. I do believe if there is a way to highlight the modification in the FMC; or not have the original route come up on pre departure clearance; it might reduce this type of error.
