Narrative:

The event took place approximately 130 mi southwest of ZZZZ. We were in VFR smooth air at FL381 (11600 meters). #3 engine spooled down. 'Eec engine 3 mode' amber EICAS message displayed. We went to the checklist and in the process; the egt limit quickly went amber then red. We shut down the engine and diverted into ZZZZ. Supplemental information from acn 781775: captain woke me up in the bunk room to tell me that we had lost #3 engine and were on our way back to ZZZZ. I came out of the bunk room and saw that we were on descent out of FL180 and headed northeast. It was obvious to me that the captain had been awakened first and was now in charge. I proceeded to the restroom and upon my return saw the altimeter at 11900 ft in descent. I took my station and asked if the appropriate checklists had been accomplished; which they had. The captain was now flying the airplane and what ensued was an uneventful and successful approach and landing to the north in ZZZ. Please; given my extreme jetlag as of this writing; feel free to call me to clarify this narrative. Supplemental information from acn 781776: I was awakened from break to be informed that #3 engine had been shut down due to it spooling down and egt red. Shut down per SOP and no restart tried due to high egt. I landed aircraft at ZZZZ with no further problems. Flight attendant did a cabin advisory and dispatch was advised of emergency. Changed aircraft at ZZZZ and proceeded to ZZZZ2 in 1 1/2 hours. Everyone performed extremely well and I was very happy with the performance of all including the station manager at ZZZZ. Metal found just behind fan case and melted metal found in tailpipe.
