Narrative:

I was completing a cross country flight for my private pilot's license. When entering the downwind approach for runway xx at ZZZ; the plane's engine died at 1000 ft above the field. I had to make an emergency landing on the interstate's sbound lane near the airport. While landing on the interstate; the plane struck a mi marker causing damage to the right wing. The plane acted like it was out of fuel; but I still had 45 mins of fuel remaining on the engine time clock and the fuel tanks still had 4 gallons of fuel left in the tanks after I had landed on the interstate. The plane was moved off the road as much as possible until the auths came and then the plane was fueled and taxied to the airport from the interstate.
