Climbing through 16000 ft; tail compartment temperature high light illuminated. Accomplished red box and QRH procedure and leveled at FL240. Upon closing left throttle and turning left AC off; light extinguished. Continued flight with left AC off and right AC re-established; and left throttle re-established. Climbed to FL280. Coordination with dispatch. Received fuel calculations for FL280 (versus FL320). Dispatch concurred with altitude selection and that declaration of emergency was not required. Continued with no further indications.
