Narrative:

On the ground at teb the first officer did preflight; copied clearance; and programmed the FMS while I was inside the FBO. I returned to aircraft and we discussed the clearance versus what was programmed into the FMS as they did not match. Our clearance was 'TEB5 white J209 sby' but the FMS was set up with 'TEB5 sby.' he explained to me we wouldn't probably get radar vectors to intercept the col 350 degree radial. After his explanation and reviewing the written clearance I understood our clearance to be 'TEB5 sby.' after departure center asked about our cleared route. The first officer responded we were cleared 'TEB5 white J209 sby.' center advised us we were off course and assigned a heading to fly. At this point; although too late; I realized our mistake. J209 was not in the FMS; therefore we flew direct to sby rather than the airway to the VOR. On the ground in teb I was initially confused about the clearance versus the FMS program. After the first officer explained why there was a difference it made sense at the time. In retrospect; I knew something was not right but was unable to trap the error. After center advised us of our off course status; the first officer reviewed the flight plan it the FMS and stated he did not know why J209 was not in the FMS but knew it should have been. The error was in how the clearance was written down. Our computer flight plan paper showed our route to be 'white J209 sby' but the first officer wrote down 'TEB5 (blank spot) sby...' this is why I was confused about the clearance but after it was explained to me it 'made sense.' both crew members are responsible for the error. The first officer programmed the FMS incorrectly and I failed to be more assertive when trying to determine why there was a difference between our clearance and the FMS.

Title: A FLT CREW DEVIATED FROM THEIR CLEARED ROUTE AFTER DEPARTURE FROM TEB.

Narrative: ON THE GND AT TEB THE FO DID PREFLT; COPIED CLRNC; AND PROGRAMMED THE FMS WHILE I WAS INSIDE THE FBO. I RETURNED TO ACFT AND WE DISCUSSED THE CLRNC VERSUS WHAT WAS PROGRAMMED INTO THE FMS AS THEY DID NOT MATCH. OUR CLRNC WAS 'TEB5 WHITE J209 SBY' BUT THE FMS WAS SET UP WITH 'TEB5 SBY.' HE EXPLAINED TO ME WE WOULDN'T PROBABLY GET RADAR VECTORS TO INTERCEPT THE COL 350 DEG RADIAL. AFTER HIS EXPLANATION AND REVIEWING THE WRITTEN CLRNC I UNDERSTOOD OUR CLRNC TO BE 'TEB5 SBY.' AFTER DEP CENTER ASKED ABOUT OUR CLRED RTE. THE FO RESPONDED WE WERE CLRED 'TEB5 WHITE J209 SBY.' CTR ADVISED US WE WERE OFF COURSE AND ASSIGNED A HDG TO FLY. AT THIS POINT; ALTHOUGH TOO LATE; I REALIZED OUR MISTAKE. J209 WAS NOT IN THE FMS; THEREFORE WE FLEW DIRECT TO SBY RATHER THAN THE AIRWAY TO THE VOR. ON THE GND IN TEB I WAS INITIALLY CONFUSED ABOUT THE CLRNC VERSUS THE FMS PROGRAM. AFTER THE FO EXPLAINED WHY THERE WAS A DIFFERENCE IT MADE SENSE AT THE TIME. IN RETROSPECT; I KNEW SOMETHING WAS NOT RIGHT BUT WAS UNABLE TO TRAP THE ERROR. AFTER CTR ADVISED US OF OUR OFF COURSE STATUS; THE FO REVIEWED THE FLT PLAN IT THE FMS AND STATED HE DID NOT KNOW WHY J209 WAS NOT IN THE FMS BUT KNEW IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. THE ERROR WAS IN HOW THE CLRNC WAS WRITTEN DOWN. OUR COMPUTER FLT PLAN PAPER SHOWED OUR RTE TO BE 'WHITE J209 SBY' BUT THE FO WROTE DOWN 'TEB5 (BLANK SPOT) SBY...' THIS IS WHY I WAS CONFUSED ABOUT THE CLRNC BUT AFTER IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME IT 'MADE SENSE.' BOTH CREW MEMBERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ERROR. THE FO PROGRAMMED THE FMS INCORRECTLY AND I FAILED TO BE MORE ASSERTIVE WHEN TRYING TO DETERMINE WHY THERE WAS A DIFFERENCE BTWN OUR CLRNC AND THE FMS.
