Narrative:

At rotation; forward lavatory smoke detector red message light as well as smoke alarm. Contacted flight attendant and verified that there was no fire. Message then went out after approximately 12 seconds. Initially; flight attendant reported that there was no fire or smoke. Flight attendant called back 20 seconds later and thought that maybe he smelled something. Declared emergency and returned to field. EICAS message smoke forward lavatory. Faulty smoke detector in forward lavatory.
