Narrative:

It was the marshaller's first time. She was given the wrong instructions as to where to stop the airplane. Arriving iah. Normal taxi to gate X. Approaching gate area all was normal with wing walkers and marshaller in place. The airplane was stopped per marshaller wand instructions. Brakes were set and normal shutdown. At about the same time lots of activity on the ramp. I rolled back my side window and was told the left engine had contacted the jetway. The marshaller had been instructed to bring us to a stop at the first line. She took that to mean the first line close to her and not the first line on the jline. After I stopped the airplane per marshaller's instructions; I noticed a lot of commotion on the ramp with all eyes on the jetway area. I called for iah station manager. The airplane was pushed back to the A320 line and passenger deplaned. Called chief pilot's office and awaited instructions. Ground personnel should be given more exacting training and practice on marshalling aircraft. Assuring the people know the correct line on the jline pertaining to each airplane. Determine maturity level for this job and its importance. Supplemental information from acn 744296: if the marshaller was in training to marshall aircraft; there needed to be a supervisor with the individual to make sure the individual was performing as trained.
