Narrative:

Approaching jwn from the south. Flight following was canceled 3-4 mi from jwn. Contacted AWOS (127.075) and found the wind to be calm. Position reports were repeated as we crossed over runway 2 above pattern altitude. Made a turn to lose altitude. Entered into a right hand pattern for runway 2. Position reports and intentions to land on runway 2 were transmitted repeatedly on base and final. On final approach a plane began its takeoff roll on runway 20. Power was immediately added and nose up to avoid the possibility of collision. No position reporting was heard from the other aircraft. Lesson learned: always be on the lookout for other aircraft. Check radios and verify frequencys; it can save your life and others.
