Narrative:

During our second attempt to land in las runway 1L; we asked the controller about landing conditions on runway 25L; we both agreed it was a better runway; we began vectors for runway 25L. We commenced our downwind with a 070 degree heading at 8000 ft; we were cleared to 6000 ft by approach; when we got an aural 'traffic' almost immediately we got an RA; 'climb; climb now' I started the escape maneuver; and at that time ATC requested an immediate right turn climb to heading 190 degrees and 8000 ft. I continued to climb to 10000 ft before 'clear of conflict' was heard. During our escape maneuver; I looked at TCAS which indicated traffic 300 ft below us. ATC then apologized and cleared us back to 6000 ft; from there approach continued without further incident.
