Narrative:

We were taxiing out at mia when the mfd suddenly went to HSI mode. We were troubleshooting when the PNF advised me that I needed to keep my head out of the cockpit and let him do the troubleshooting. I replied that he was correct but that we needed to rectify the problem. We needed the mfd to accept the radar mode because of all the thunderstorms in the area. We turned east onto what I thought was taxiway K. As I was taxiing (light rain was falling); the PNF looked up and said; 'are we on the runway?' 'no' I said. He insisted that he thought we were. As I began to perceive the unbelievable (that he was right); the ground controller asked if we were on the runway. I replied that we were and would exit immediately. We entered runway 26R at taxiway Z and exited at taxiway K6. Permitting the distraction of the mfd problem and the slightly reduced visibility caused by rain on the windshield set me up for this terrible mistake. The copilot was great. Not only did he catch the taxi error; he solved the mfd problem before we departed. Supplemental information from acn 708287: we were taxiing out of the ramp in mia for takeoff on runway 27R. As we were taxiing; the mfd reverted to HSI mode instead of radar mode. As I began to troubleshoot the problem (to get radar mode back because of the thunderstorm activity); I noticed that the PF was looking down to help me fix the problem. I advised him to keep looking outside if he was to continue taxiing and I would fix the problem. The PF told me that I was correct and he continued to taxi. Shortly after; I looked up and surveyed my surrounding and quickly asked the captain if we were on the runway. He told me that we were not. I then insisted that we were in fact on the runway when the ground controller asked us if we were on the runway. The PF answered ground and told him that we would exit the runway immediately. After taxiing off the runway and in a suitable holding area; we then fixed the mfd; ran all appropriate checklists; and regained complete situational awareness. The WX conditions at the time of the occurrence were VFR; but light rain was falling and was making it harder to clearly see outside of the aircraft. I feel that the mfd distraction combined with the limited visibility set things in motion for this terrible mistake.

Title: A FALCON 10 FLT CREW TAXIING FOR TKOF AT MIA WERE TROUBLESHOOTING A PROB WITH THE MFD RADAR DISPLAY WHEN THEY INADVERTENTLY TAXIED ONTO A RWY.

Narrative: WE WERE TAXIING OUT AT MIA WHEN THE MFD SUDDENLY WENT TO HSI MODE. WE WERE TROUBLESHOOTING WHEN THE PNF ADVISED ME THAT I NEEDED TO KEEP MY HEAD OUT OF THE COCKPIT AND LET HIM DO THE TROUBLESHOOTING. I REPLIED THAT HE WAS CORRECT BUT THAT WE NEEDED TO RECTIFY THE PROB. WE NEEDED THE MFD TO ACCEPT THE RADAR MODE BECAUSE OF ALL THE TSTMS IN THE AREA. WE TURNED E ONTO WHAT I THOUGHT WAS TXWY K. AS I WAS TAXIING (LIGHT RAIN WAS FALLING); THE PNF LOOKED UP AND SAID; 'ARE WE ON THE RWY?' 'NO' I SAID. HE INSISTED THAT HE THOUGHT WE WERE. AS I BEGAN TO PERCEIVE THE UNBELIEVABLE (THAT HE WAS RIGHT); THE GND CTLR ASKED IF WE WERE ON THE RWY. I REPLIED THAT WE WERE AND WOULD EXIT IMMEDIATELY. WE ENTERED RWY 26R AT TXWY Z AND EXITED AT TXWY K6. PERMITTING THE DISTR OF THE MFD PROB AND THE SLIGHTLY REDUCED VISIBILITY CAUSED BY RAIN ON THE WINDSHIELD SET ME UP FOR THIS TERRIBLE MISTAKE. THE COPLT WAS GREAT. NOT ONLY DID HE CATCH THE TAXI ERROR; HE SOLVED THE MFD PROB BEFORE WE DEPARTED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 708287: WE WERE TAXIING OUT OF THE RAMP IN MIA FOR TKOF ON RWY 27R. AS WE WERE TAXIING; THE MFD REVERTED TO HSI MODE INSTEAD OF RADAR MODE. AS I BEGAN TO TROUBLESHOOT THE PROB (TO GET RADAR MODE BACK BECAUSE OF THE TSTM ACTIVITY); I NOTICED THAT THE PF WAS LOOKING DOWN TO HELP ME FIX THE PROB. I ADVISED HIM TO KEEP LOOKING OUTSIDE IF HE WAS TO CONTINUE TAXIING AND I WOULD FIX THE PROB. THE PF TOLD ME THAT I WAS CORRECT AND HE CONTINUED TO TAXI. SHORTLY AFTER; I LOOKED UP AND SURVEYED MY SURROUNDING AND QUICKLY ASKED THE CAPT IF WE WERE ON THE RWY. HE TOLD ME THAT WE WERE NOT. I THEN INSISTED THAT WE WERE IN FACT ON THE RWY WHEN THE GND CTLR ASKED US IF WE WERE ON THE RWY. THE PF ANSWERED GND AND TOLD HIM THAT WE WOULD EXIT THE RWY IMMEDIATELY. AFTER TAXIING OFF THE RWY AND IN A SUITABLE HOLDING AREA; WE THEN FIXED THE MFD; RAN ALL APPROPRIATE CHKLISTS; AND REGAINED COMPLETE SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. THE WX CONDITIONS AT THE TIME OF THE OCCURRENCE WERE VFR; BUT LIGHT RAIN WAS FALLING AND WAS MAKING IT HARDER TO CLRLY SEE OUTSIDE OF THE ACFT. I FEEL THAT THE MFD DISTR COMBINED WITH THE LIMITED VISIBILITY SET THINGS IN MOTION FOR THIS TERRIBLE MISTAKE.
