Narrative:

At brake release got EICAS messages for #3 engine. Contacted maintenance. Flight attendant at 4R let us know we had smoke on right side. No fire indication ever in cockpit. Confirmed with ramp we had smoke on right side. Maintenance arrives; has us shut down #4 engine. Says fire is in #3 tailpipe and to fire #3 extinguisher bottle. Fire department arrives. We decide not to evacuate/evacuation. Fire under control. Tow back to gate. Supplemental information from acn 689228: initial maintenance supervisor diagnosis was some sort of an automatic engine shutdown due to internal component failure (fuel control; etc).
