Narrative:

On takeoff out of sna, during routine cutback of engine power for noise abatement, the left engine of the B757 failed and caught fire. Extinguishers were used within the engine and fire was put out. There was a loud explosion and much movement in the cabin from the aircraft attitude. After a brief period of jerking movements, the plane flew as normal and the captain advised us of an emergency landing back to sna. We prepared the cabin with our planned evacuate/evacuation checklist and made it to point #6. Passenger were calm for the most part. The aircraft landing was very hard and brakes were applied abruptly due to the short runway. Emergency vehicles met the plane and determined it was safe to use a ramp stand at door 2R exit. Passenger and crew exited onto tarmac and were escorted to the terminal. Flight attendants proceeded with sequence. Flight attendant treated on nov/xx/97 for neck and upper back pain as a result of the thrust and jerking of plane. Flight attendants were calm and professional and handled the incident beautifully.
