Narrative:

On the night of jan/mon/06; aircraft terminated at gate for line routine overnight maintenance. Upon speaking with the flight crew; the captain spoke of various items that required maintenance attention. In reference to the flight control panel; the captain mentioned that the feel differential pressure light on the flight control panel would not illuminate when pushed to test; nor would it light up with all the other lights. In the event of an actual feel differential pressure it would work. For this reason; it was decided that the panel would be changed. The panel that was removed; X; south/I 0270280; was replaced with Y; south/I 0270279; and signed off on jan/tue/06. When checking part compatibility; the aircraft tail number; the air traffic area code; and the south/I number were entered. With this information; a parts effectivity screen appeared for aircraft X air traffic area 27. The effectivity screen that appeared listed this particular part in question; south/I 0270279. Only by line selecting this particular part and then pressing enter would the special information screen appear. Had the special information criteria screen appeared before the parts effectivity screen; the incorrect part would not have been installed on aircraft X.
