Narrative:

I had a gate call for a captain's clock that had no backgnd lighting. I replaced the captain's clock with the alternate effectivity part. I did not understand the note saying if alternate is installed it must be the same part number as the first officer's clock. The mistake was caught on the morning paperwork audit from our data entry personnel. The clock was replaced with the matching number clock at the next maintenance station; with no further discrepancies ed. Believe the note in maintenance parts directory could be more clear; in retrospect. I thought I was correct at the time of installation of the clock.
