Narrative:

We had pushed from the gate; started engines when we noticed the reverser light on the aft overhead panel illuminated. After checking the QRH; we returned to the gate and called dispatch; who connected me to maintenance control. On the 3-WAY conference call; the mechanic on duty told me to cycle the reverser 6 times; leaving it in reverse for a minimum of 10 seconds each time. If the system did not detect a fault; it would reset itself; and we could continue. I followed the procedures; called back; and was asked if I had put anything in the logbook. When I told the mechanic I had not yet done so; he told me not to; so he could mark the delay as mx-03; pilot-mechanic conference. Dispatch was in agreement. The mechanic said that we were legal per FARS to do it this way; otherwise we would have to call contract maintenance to clear the logbook entry. The warning light had cleared; and with the information I had; I continued as I was told to do.
