Narrative:

On takeoff out of teb on teb 5 departure SID. We exceeded the 1500 ft leveloff before reaching the 4.5 DME point. We had climbed to 1900 ft when ATC mentioned to maintain 1500 ft. We quickly descended to 1500 ft and no aircraft conflict was noted. Contributing factors: we have had an intermittent altitude alert system. The aural warning portion has been not working half the time and maintenance hasn't yet been able to track it down. Also; the altitude alert system is part of a recent (dec 04) rvsm upgrade. Target altitude is now in a different place than what I have been used to for 15 yrs. I have had only 6 or so lndgs in the aircraft since this upgrade and I have been flying another aircraft (make and model) for the last two years.
