Narrative:

Lavatory smoke at 3000 ft on climb out of an IOE flight. Advised flight attendant who is italian. Communication was difficult. First officer weak pilot referred to aom. Flight attendant said no smoke. I asked flight attendant to perform lavatory smoke detector test. I was unable to confirm he did the test at all. Elected to return and have it checked out. Lavatory smoke went out on base leg. First officer overshot localizer. ATC all over us. First officer went back through localizer. At one point, aircraft close to stall and I took it away and turned off autoplt and realigned with runway and got the aircraft back on glide path. Gave aircraft back to first officer, finished checklist, and landed. I feel I got very little help from my crew and flying single pilot. Supplemental information from acn 637631: were vectored by ATC in a tight pattern back to land at dfw in IMC. When cleared for the approach, I selected approach mode. The autoplt did not have time to turn the aircraft. I overshot the localizer. The localizer was recaptured and a successful approach and landing was made.
