Narrative:

Climbing through 17000 ft, the right engine experienced what appeared to be a compressor stall with a temperature of approximately 750 degrees C. Engine was brought to idle, appeared to stabilize. An emergency was declared and an uneventful landing was accomplished on runway 17C at ZZZ. Crash fire rescue equipment inspection was ok. Uneventful taxi and gate arrival. Great job by the flight attendants, first officer, ATC, and crash fire rescue equipment. Supplemental information from acn 635967: right engine blew, making loud noise. Aircraft veered. Captain called with 4 chimes with test information. Flight attendants prepared for evacuate/evacuation. Safe landing. Everything worked well. 12 mins was all we had to do planned emergency checklist. Crew worked well together. In 29 yrs, this was first planned evacuate/evacuation and was very nerve-wracking. Should have been given choice to not take next flight immediately.
