Narrative:

After takeoff, I put the landing gear up and the engine quit. I immediately realized that I had turned the fuel boost pump to 'hi' ('hi' floods the engine) instead of putting the gear up. I then turned the fuel pump off. The engine restarted and I resumed normal climb. Analyzing this horrific mistake, I realized that the fuel boost pump is located directly next to the landing gear position green lights. Not only is this switch located right next to the landing gear lights but the switch operates in the same manner as the gear switch. It is a locked switch that has to be pulled out and selected up to be turned on. The landing gear is also a switch that has to be pulled out and selected up. In my opinion, this fuel pump switch should not be co-located next to the landing gear indicating lights, or the gear selector. The fuel boost pump switch should be capped or relocated so it is not next to the gear position lights or gear selector switch. A human factor was that I had flown many hours in the preceding 36 hours and was slightly tired. (This is the 2ND time I have done this in the 450 hours I have flown this aircraft.)

Title: PLT OF BE36 RPTS HE INADVERTENTLY PLACED AUX FUEL PUMP SWITCH TO 'HIGH' INSTEAD OF RETRACTING GEAR. THIS RESULTED IN TEMPORARY ENG FAILURE UNTIL HE RESOLVED THE ERROR.

Narrative: AFTER TKOF, I PUT THE LNDG GEAR UP AND THE ENG QUIT. I IMMEDIATELY REALIZED THAT I HAD TURNED THE FUEL BOOST PUMP TO 'HI' ('HI' FLOODS THE ENG) INSTEAD OF PUTTING THE GEAR UP. I THEN TURNED THE FUEL PUMP OFF. THE ENG RESTARTED AND I RESUMED NORMAL CLB. ANALYZING THIS HORRIFIC MISTAKE, I REALIZED THAT THE FUEL BOOST PUMP IS LOCATED DIRECTLY NEXT TO THE LNDG GEAR POSITION GREEN LIGHTS. NOT ONLY IS THIS SWITCH LOCATED RIGHT NEXT TO THE LNDG GEAR LIGHTS BUT THE SWITCH OPERATES IN THE SAME MANNER AS THE GEAR SWITCH. IT IS A LOCKED SWITCH THAT HAS TO BE PULLED OUT AND SELECTED UP TO BE TURNED ON. THE LNDG GEAR IS ALSO A SWITCH THAT HAS TO BE PULLED OUT AND SELECTED UP. IN MY OPINION, THIS FUEL PUMP SWITCH SHOULD NOT BE CO-LOCATED NEXT TO THE LNDG GEAR INDICATING LIGHTS, OR THE GEAR SELECTOR. (THIS IS THE 2ND TIME I HAVE DONE THIS IN THE 450 HOURS I HAVE FLOWN THIS ACFT.)
