Narrative:
The active runway at the time was runway 17. Intersection takeoffs were being used. I was at the taxiway B intersection on the east side of runway 17/35. From this position a left turn would yield a 3500 ft takeoff on runway 17 and a right turn would yield a 3500 ft takeoff on runway 35. The tower said turn right cleared for takeoff. I read this back, turned right and took off on runway 35. I assumed the tower had wanted me to use runway 35. I should have realized that they wanted me to take off on runway 17 and turn right after takeoff. I am not sure whether or not the tower used standard terminology but I have more than enough experience to have realized that they wanted a right turn after takeoff. I should have asked for additional clarification. After takeoff the tower called for me to make an immediate left turn, which I did.
